Range & Renko Strategies
Non-time-based chart strategies using Range bars and Renko bricks to filter noise and identify clear trends and reversals.

Range Bars and Renko reshape the chart by filtering out time and focusing purely on price movement. A range bar completes after price moves a fixed distance regardless of how long that takes; a Renko brick prints only after price moves one brick-size in either direction, ignoring time entirely. The result is noise-suppressed charts where noise-trading signals disappear and true directional moves become visible. At the cost of losing temporal information.
These alternative chart types are particularly useful for strategies that care about displacement rather than duration. Renko Trend-Follow strategies trade the simplest signal on these charts: two consecutive bricks in the same direction signal a trend; two opposing bricks signal a reversal. Range Bar VWAP Reclaim trades reversion setups on range-compressed charts where small oscillations have been filtered out. Renko Double Top captures pattern formations on price-normalized charts where chart patterns are geometrically cleaner. Range Bar Scalp targets quick moves on tight-range chart types for intraday traders. The critical calibration is brick/range size. Too small reintroduces noise the method was designed to eliminate, too large produces so few signals that edge-per-year drops below transaction costs. Match brick size to the instrument's typical daily range: 10–20% of ADR is a reasonable starting point.
Renko bricks filter noise by only printing when price moves a fixed amount. Trade color changes with trend confirmation for clean entries.
Range bars create equal-sized candles. Trade mean reversion when price stretches away from the VWAP using Bollinger Bands on range charts.
Renko filters out time and minor noise, making chart patterns exceptionally clean. A double-top on Renko is a rare, high-reliability reversal signal. Two failed attempts at the same brick level signal...
Range bars build only on price movement, not time, making VWAP crosses cleaner and more significant. Trade VWAP reclaims on range bars for noise-filtered intraday signals with naturally tight stops.
