Volume Profile Strategies

Trade using volume distribution analysis. Point of Control, Value Area High/Low, and volume nodes to identify institutional price levels.

Volume Profile is a horizontal volume histogram that reveals which price levels attracted the most trading activity over a given period. Unlike the familiar vertical volume-vs-time display, the profile shows volume-vs-price. Exposing key reference levels: Point of Control (POC, the single price with the most volume), Value Area (the 70% high-volume range bounded by VAH and VAL), and Low Volume Nodes (thin-volume gaps that price traverses quickly). These levels act as support, resistance, and price magnets on subsequent retests.

The strategies in this category exploit three volume-profile behaviors: reversion to POC when price extends away, rejection at High Volume Nodes (HVN) where prior absorption happened, and breakouts through Low Volume Nodes (LVN) where thin liquidity allows rapid transit. Naked POC retests target a prior session's POC that hasn't been revisited; these act as magnets within 1–3 subsequent sessions. HVN Support Bounces trade retests of high-activity zones in established trends. POC Reversion fades intraday moves away from developing POC. Volume Node Breakouts ride expansion through LVNs. Volume profile works best on futures and liquid ETFs where centralized exchange data produces meaningful distributions; applied to thinly-traded instruments or fragmented markets, the profile shapes become unreliable.

POC Mean Reversion

Volume Profile15m–1H2:1 R:RLow Risk

The Point of Control (POC) is the price with the most volume traded. Price tends to gravitate back to this level, trade the reversion.

Low Volume Node Breakout

Volume Profile1H–4H3:1 R:R

Low Volume Nodes (LVN) are price levels with minimal trading activity. Price moves quickly through these zones, trade the acceleration.

High Volume Node Bounce

Volume Profile1H–Daily2:1 R:RLow RiskAny

High Volume Nodes (HVNs) are price levels where significant trading activity has occurred. They act as strong magnets and support/resistance. Trade the bounce off an untested HVN for high-probability ...

Naked POC Retest

Volume ProfileDaily3:1 R:RMedium RiskAny

A 'naked' Point of Control is a prior session's POC that has not yet been revisited. Markets have a strong tendency to return to naked POCs, trade the return for magnet-to-level moves.
